Our clinic is equipped with some of the world's leading ophthalmic laser equipment.
Laser equipment is used in our clinic for treatment of a range of retinal diseases, in management of glaucoma and also following cataract removal.
Lasers are commonplace in modern medicine, but are especially common in ophthalmology as they allow diagnostic and treatment procedures to be undertaken with extreme precision. Lasers used at Gladesville Retina include:
YAG (nd:YAG) laser
This type of laser is used mainly for correction of posterior capsular opacity which can occur following cataract surgery. The laser is used to make tiny openings in the lens capsule which can become cloudy and obscure vision. YAG laser can be done during a normal consultation visit in a matter of a few minutes, and usually results in an immediate improvement in vision.
YAG laser can also be used to reduce pressure in glaucoma, by creating small holes in the outer edge of the iris which provide better drainage of fluid from the eye.
SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty)
This type of laser allows quick and highly accuarte glaucoma laser treatment customised to each individual patient's response. SLT like YAG laser can be done during a normal consultation visit in a matter of a few minutes.
Argon retinal laser
This type of laser is used to treat blood vessels in the retina that can leak blood and fluid in the back of the eye. It is also used in managing eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein or (less commonly) artery occlusion.
